Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard, LLP, is one of North Carolina's oldest and most prominent law firms. Throughout the life of the firm, our lawyers have been leaders in the legal, business and political affairs of our state and nation. Clients have been leading business, government and social institutions.

Throughout its more than 100 years of existence, Brooks Pierce has limited its membership to only the most qualified and highly motivated attorneys. Great emphasis is placed on integrity, professionalism, client service and unexcelled legal work product. With few exceptions, members of our firm have made their entire careers at Brooks Pierce (several of our members have however joined the firm following records of success as Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, Chief of Staff to the Governor of North Carolina, manager of a national presidential campaign and in the investment banking field).

The firm has steadfastly declined law firm mergers. Our partners believe that individual professionals best develop good judgment, legal creativity, self-assurance and independence through years of experience working with senior professionals on sophisticated engagements in an environment of firmly shared values. This is possible only where attorneys make the lifelong commitment typical of Brooks lawyers.

Brooks Pierce is not separated into departments or divided by other permanent internal hierarchies. Maximum emphasis is placed on the autonomy of individual lawyers working in teams assembled on an engagement-by-engagement basis. The firm pursues a general business practice, focused on complex litigation, telecommunications and media, banking and financial services, environmental law, labor and employment law, corporate and securities law, state and federal taxation, mergers and acquisitions, government relations, utilities, construction, real estate and land use, and trusts and estates.
